The Avocet is launched at the RAC Club

Friday the 23rd of March saw the launch of the latest Avocet designed by Mike Reeves. The event took place at the RAC Club on Pall Mall - London.

The Avocet has been developed by MMI Sportscars Ltd to appeal to the motoring enthusiast who wants an affordable road car which can also be used on track days. It has been developed by a team of respected engineers and constructed around an aluminium honeycomb chassis mid section with front and rear steel sub-frames which ensures a class leading chassis stiffness. The suspension is double wishbone at the front with a deDion tube at the rear.

The Avocet is mid-engined and the current version is powered by the Ford DHE420 2-litre engine with an output of 150bhp, the car on display is powered by a modified version to produce 220bhp with a kerb weight of 720 kg

Six prototypes have been built to evaluate ride and handling as well as reliability and the initial programmes have been successfully completed. All regulations have been complied with and the vehicles are fully road legal.

Construction of the vehicle has been designed to ensure a very efficient assembly process and also allows the easy installation of new engine and gearboxes as the industry develops new products. The chassis is fitted with a one piece body system attached after the chassis is complete which eliminates rattles and poor fitting usually associated with low volume vehicles. This also allows for easier body modification updates during the life of the vehicle.

Several variations have been developed, including a Spyder version and a removable hard top version. This vehicle is ideally suited to electric propulsion and detailed studies have been undertaken.
